Home Invasions are on the Rise

Posted In: Home by admin

This past Saturday afternoon my family and I were enjoying the great weather with our friends and neighbors while doing some much needed yard work. The kids were playing, our dogs were out and about. I noticed two police vehicles driving slowly up the road towards us. When they saw us outside they asked “Everything OK?” They went on to explain that there has been a string of home invasion burglaries in our community recently. As a result, they were stepping up patrols in hopes of catching these guys.

Later that night on the local news the main story was about the recent home invasions. In less than a week 4 different home invasions took place between 2pm and 8pm only miles from my home. In all cases the criminals made their move as the victims were coming home from work. They approached the vehicle, forced the victim out at gunpoint and into the home. Once inside they tied up the Homeowners took their cash, gold, diamonds and other valuables.

Needless to say this was extremely eye opening to myself and neighbors. So what can we do to protect ourselves from home invasions?

  • Keep your doors and windows locked at all times.
  • If you have a alarm system, keep it armed day and night. If you don’t own an alarm system, consider investing in one.
  • Never automatically open your front door. Make sure you know your caller’s identity before letting him in.
  • If the person at your door is a stranger, ask for identification to be passed under the door. Then call their Business to verify who they are and what they are there for. If he is unable to provide identification do not admit him and call 911 immediately.
  • It is advisable to have a wide angle viewer (peep-hole) in the door so that you can check a person’s identity without unlocking your door.
  • All doors in your home leading to the outside should have dead-bolt locks. A must for robbery prevention.
  • When away at night, leave a light burning.
  • Do not leave a key over a door or under a mat.
  • The single lock on a garage door is inadequate to keep home invaders from prying up the opposite side and crawling in. Use a padlock. But never leave it unlocked. This is an invitation to have the padlock removed so that a key can be made, and the lock returned to its position. Later, the burglar returns when no one is home and enters at his leisure, using “his” key.
  • Mark your valuables and keep an accurate record of all your most valuable possessions.
  • When leaving on a trip: A. Stop all deliveries. B. Connect a light to a timer. C. Notify the police and have a neighbor check your home periodically. D. Have someone maintain your lawn.
  • Be a concerned neighbor. If you see a suspicious person, car or situation, contact the police.
  • If you live in an apartment building with an intercom system to the front door, make sure the landlord keeps it in operating order.
  • Never admit anyone unless you are expecting him or know him.
  • Never admit anyone to the building who is there to see another tenant or to deliver something to another apartment.
  • Anyone asking admission so that he can do some work for another tenant should not be admitted, but should be referred to the building’s manager.
  • If you see someone in your building who looks out of place or is acting suspiciously, contact the police.
  • God forbid, What if it happens to you?

If you are a victim of a home invasion robbery remember the following:

  • First and foremost try to stay calm.
  • Cooperate, No amount of cash or property is worth getting hurt over.
  • DON’T fight back unless you determine that you are in danger of being killed. Instead, concentrate on getting information so you can be an effective witness.
  • LOOK carefully at the intruders, even if they are masked. Is there something unique about them such as scars, tattoos, large nose? What are they wearing? Listen to everything they say, and how they say it. Catch any distinguishing odors such as tobacco, alcohol, or aftershave.

Start planning today, start with your home and family. Branch out and try to organize a neighborhood watch or call a neighborhood meeting to discuss your safety concerns. Contact your local sheriffs office and ask if they would be willing to come and talk to the group. Most law enforcement agencies are happy to do so. It is our job to take charge of our personal security both within our homes and communities. Remember the old saying, “There is power in numbers.” This is absolutely true when dealing with criminals. Believe me if they see signs of a united community or neighborhood, they are likely to go elsewhere.

In February 2010, I will have owned my Home for 5 years, making me eligible for the $6,500 tax credit if I purchased another home by April. My fiance has never owned a home, making her eligible for the $8,000 tax credit as a first time home buyer. We’re very eager to purchase a home before April. How would the tax credits on a purchase apply to a couple in our situation? Thank you.

If you *don’t* get married, and buy the house together, you would have to pick a credit and then split it. If you opt for her to get the $8000, she can apply for all of it. (And runs the risk of paying the entire amount back.) If you opt for the $6500 credit, the details aren’t out, but presumably you would claim the entire $6500 and she would claim $0.

Is your home secure from intruders? Would you be alerted if there were suspicious activities outside the front door? If you can’t answer these questions with a resounding yes, then you need to boost your home security with an indoor and an outdoor wireless security camera.

Extend Video Surveillance Outdoors

Okay, you’ve got yourself covered indoors and you’re smug about this. But you’re forgetting that home security is not just monitoring the nanny and the kids. You have to know if there are any unusual goings-on out there; if you are staying in an apartment, you need to know who is knocking on the door and what he has behind his back – a pizza carton or a gun? An outdoor wireless security camera can give you the right answer.

Through the door’s peep hole, you can see the person’s distorted face but you can’t guess what he is toting. An outdoor wireless security camera positioned across the door and another on the outer door at eye-level can solve the problem for you. Still if he is a stranger, you don’t open the door. You communicate to him through the camera’s two-way audio/speakers and that’s that. You’re safe behind that door.

Here’s an additional bonanza. If you are getting home and content insurance, you’re likely to get bigger discounts if you have put up an outdoor wireless security camera and your Home is rigged with indoor surveillance cameras. So on top of your home security, you get a better deal from the insurance company.

So Many Brands, It’s Confusing!

There is a host of wireless security camera brands. Before you get lost in the maze, make a checklist of what you need from your outdoor wireless security camera. Here are some factors to consider before you lug home a brand new outdoor security camera:

– Camera range. Do you need a security camera that has an extensive range or no?
– Is your part of the neighborhood well-illuminated at night with street lamps?
– Is there a power source nearby?
– Is the weather in your area warmer or colder?
– Do you want a date/time/sequence recording?
– Do you want the convenience of a battery strength indicator?
– Do you prefer an easy delete of all recordings?
– Do you want a camera that still works well in total darkness?
– Do you want a solar-powered outdoor security camera?
– Do you want a motion detection feature to save on unnecessary recordings?

These are a lot of questions to ask yourself but these are valuable when you are seeking an expert’s help to guide you in your choice of outdoor wireless security camera. Brand comparison can come later on when you have identified the features you need with your outdoor security camera, and oh, your budget will also have a lot of say on the matter of camera brands.

The Pros of Boosting Home Surveillance

There’s much to gain when you boost home surveillance with an outdoor wireless security camera or cameras. You gain peace of mind over the security of home and family and you can control and manage your home security without calling in the guards. There’s that home and content insurance discount too. Now you know why it pays to boost your home security with exterior surveillance cameras.

In this short article, I’ll discuss the top four of home Business opportunities available today. As you’ll see, there are a lot of legitimate businesses you can start from home. There are many home businesses that require very little in terms of upfront investment some are even free. I hope that this article will give you some ideas for what is the best option for you. Hopefully, I’ve given you some direction in finding the best home business for you.

1. Internet Marketing

As an Internet marketer myself, I highly recommend internet marketing as one of the best home business opportunities available today. All you need to get started is an internet connection and a computer. After that it’s a matter of investigating the multitude of home based businesses you can start. Some of the best internet businesses you can start include selling information products, affiliate marketing, selling goods on eBay, and establishing your own ecommerce store. Depending on the kind of online marketing business you start you can make a lot of money in relatively short period of time!

2. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or Network Marketing

Despite some bad reputation in certain circles, multi-level marketing (MLM) or network marketing businesses are legitimate home business opportunities. Basically, they involve you into recruiting people “under” you (or in your “downline”) to sell the company’s products or services to, or buying the rights to distribute a company’s products or services to customers.

You earn money through the commissions earned when you sell products or services, and through obtaining a percentage of the sales revenue earned by anyone in your downline. The power of multi-level marketing is the fact that you can have a very large downline. Not only that you earn a commission on your direct recruits sales, but you also earn a percentage on the sales of people your recruits have recruited. Most network marketing or multi-level marketing companies are structured so that they are several levels deep.

3. Home Based Franchise

One of the very best home based businesses is a franchise. More and more companies are offering franchises as home business opportunities. Many of these franchises are service based, where the services are marketed or performed online. One of the major advantages of buying a franchise is that you’ll get training and a proven system to follow. Many home based franchises are much less expensive than what you might think.

4. Business Opportunities

Business opportunities or “bizops” are similar to multi-level marketing systems and franchises. They also offer a formula for running a business. However, they can vary from rather expensive licenses to selling high-ticket items to “business-in-a-box” systems, where you buy the tools and materials required to set up a certain kind of business or service. Unlike franchise businesses and multi-level marketing, business opportunities are generally less regulated. There is higher probability of them promising more than what they deliver. Therefore, it’s a very good idea to maintain a Healthy level of skepticism when evaluating any home business opportunity.

In my Home town the value of homes are down as much as 30 percent. Most of the revenue for schools and police comes from property taxes, so rapidly lower housing prices have cut the revenue needed for these important things.

What should the Mayor and City Council do with rapidly falling home asssesments and tax revenue, should they raise the tax rate to make up for the difference?

Start living with in there means! City county and state governments make decisions that affect the economic welfare of there citizens. They need to deal with the consequences. Just like you and I have to.
Maybe if the re salts of there decisions, hits in there own wallet they will start making better choices.

If you are considering buying a reverse osmosis system for your home READ THIS.  Home reverse osmosis systems may not be the best choice for your home.  I’ll tell what I found to be a better choice.  But it is your decision to make.

The reason is reverse osmosis(RO) systems do not completely filter tap water. RO as a rule do not filter out chemicals like chlorine, unless it has a carbon filter attachment.  It is also questionable if other contaminants may slip past a reverse osmosis unit.
In fairness, reverse osmosis systems do have their place but probably not for the home. You decide.

Reverse Osmosis?

Home reverse osmosis systems only block things that are “heavier” than water or things that have a molecular structure larger than water.  We have seen individual bloggers and company websites making claims of better health using method.  But, the truth is that the only health benefit lies in the area of kidney dialysis.

Do You Live on a River?

This type of system is only needed if your water comes straight from a stream or river and then you will still need to use additional steps to make the water safe to drink.  Some sort of disinfection method, usually chlorine, needs to be used or bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illnesses will still be present.

We have seen people suggest Home reverse osmosis systems to pregnant women.  That’s scary.  Pregnant women need to avoid anything that could be contaminated with bacteria.  Water should be disinfected before consumption.  Even distillation would be better.  The suggestion that you can protect your health through reverse osmosis filtration is just not the whole story, because it alone does not make drinking water safe.

Reverse Osmosis Systems – Public Water

To repeat, home reverse osmosis systems are not the end all be all.  They are simply one step in the water purification process.  If your drinking water comes from a treatment facility, it has likely already undergone a similar process.

Home reverse osmosis systems are expensive and wasteful.  The best units waste 5 gallons of water for every one gallon that is filtered.  This is usually for industrial use but it shows how RO is not the best choice.

The water that comes out of home reverse osmosis systems is unnatural, so when it goes back into the environment, it changes the content and composition of the ground water.

RO Good for Industrial Use

There are many industrial applications for the system.  Since they de-mineralize water, it can be used for film processing and printing.  When treatment facilities need to desalinize or remove salt from ocean or brackish water, it is the system of choice.

Minerals in Water are Important

We need those trace minerals that the system filters out.  The things that we do not need in our water are chemicals and chlorine.

Hopefully, you see that home reverse osmosis systems are not the right choice for most people.  You can have better Health by installing a good water filtration system. But you must choose the right filter from the right company. Most companies claim to have the best, but performance data by an independent testing facility tells who really does.

Reverse Osmosis does have its place.  If you have the need for one than by all means get one.  But for the average in home use it probably is not the best selection.  For more information for the water filter type that is best for in home use see my website. -Larry L. Taylor

No matter what type of real estate you are looking into buying, location is key. This is true for a new home as much as it is for a Business location or a previously owned home. As you are choosing the place for your newly constructed home, here are some things to consider.

Scope out the Neighborhood

Just because a neighborhood is new does not mean that it is the right neighborhood for you. Do you want certain amenities, like a community fitness center or swimming pool? Is living in a secure, gated community important for you, or would you rather look for a neighborhood with a park for your kids? If you have kids, consider the schools they will have to attend in that neighborhood. Are they close enough to walk to if you want that option? Where is the bus stop if your kids will be riding the bus? Are the schools well rated academically, and do they have the extra curricular activities your kids want? These questions will help you find a neighborhood that will meet your family’s needs.

Keep in mind that many neighborhoods have homeowner’s associations. These post rules that you must follow as a homeowner in the community. For instance, the type of fence you can use for your yard or the type of home business you can operate out of your home may be regulated by the homeowner’s association. You will also have to pay dues to the association if there is one. Find out all you can about the association for the neighborhood you are considering.

Consider the View

While you may not be looking for a home with a view, you do need to think about what you will be looking at outside of your windows each day. If you live in a naturally beautiful area, look for a home with a natural view. Watch out for lots that will eventually give you a view of a Retail area or a busy street. These may not be appealing to you. If the land around your new Home’s lot is not yet developed, find out what it is zoned for. This will help you imagine what your future view may be.

Accessibility to Major Roads

While you may not want to live on the backside of the interstate, you do want to choose a lot that makes your commute convenient if you have one. Access to major highways or interstates, particularly if you live in an area where commuting is common, makes your home more valuable when you look to resell it. Consider your daily drive when you choose your home’s location.

Accessibility to Major Amenities

What is it that your family needs to be close to in your town? Do you need to be close to the grocery store or drug store for those midnight diaper or medicine runs? Do you have someone in your home who has a gym membership and needs to live near their favorite gym? Make sure the home you buy is located close to the town’s amenities that you use the most frequently. If you need access to city amenities, such as the public library, make sure your home is located within the city limits.

Considerations When Buying Land

If you decide to buy a plot of land and build your own new home, you have some special considerations to make. For instance, you need to make sure that you will be able to set up your utilities. If sewer access is not available, you need to make sure that you are able to drill a successful well. Buying land before doing the necessary research could be an expensive mistake.

As you can see, buying a new home does not necessarily mean your location will be ideal. You need to make several considerations as you shop for land or a newly built home. By taking these things into consideration, you will be able to find your dream home in an ideal location for your family’s needs.

My husband and I are planning to buy a house that is neared by my workplace. We do not want to put out for sale on our current home until we find a new Home which means there are going to be a period time that we will be owning two houses at the same time. We are thinking of taking my name out from the current home and using my name only for the new home, so we can get home exemption for both houses. Would that work?

yes it would

Tax Benefits of Home Ownership

Posted In: Home by admin

All of us yearn to own a home. It means a lot of savings for us; no longer do we have to pay rent for an indefinite amount of time. No longer can we put up with unreasonable landlords who’d demand payment for rent even when the due date is not around yet. With home ownership, all we get to pay are the monthly terms for the mortgage and that goes for only a definite amount of time.

Savings from rent, of course, are not the only thing that we can enjoy when we make true on our dreams for home ownership. There are tax benefits that you can enjoy when you own a home, and that is a welcome respite. We all know that tax can be a nightmare; the amount of tax we pay grows as our salary grows. Ironic, but as our income grow, we find it harder to save up for a home or other expenses.

Here are just some of the tax benefits you can enjoy when you own your home and regularly pay mortgage:

The interest you pay every month can be deducted from your income taxes. This information should be placed in the 1040 tax form under schedule A in order to be included in your annual tax deductions and refunds.

You don’t have to pay monthly property taxes. The lender does this on your behalf, using a fund in escrow. This escrow is composed partly of the funds you pay every month for your mortgage. All you need to do is report the amount of taxes using information provided to you by the lender at the end of the year.

You can apply for deductions for any cost you incur when you repair, or remodel the house that you bought if you used a loan to do that. The amount you spent for acquiring the home can also be deducted from your annual income tax figures. You can claim for at most $1 million in the interest you incurred from these debts.

The government reduces the amount it will get from your proceeds in case you sell your home using the expenses that you incurred to improve and remodel the house. Your taxable gains is also substantially reduced by whatever expenses you incur when trying to sell the house like advertising as well as the commissions you pay an agent.

Lower down payments can also result in tax benefits for you. Even though you’d probably be paying over an extended period of time–we could be looking at a term of 15 to 30 years–you can enjoy deductions from your taxable income throughout that term. You can save up or use the money for further investments to secure your family’s future.

To summarize it, owning a home greatly reduces your real income. That is because whatever expenses that have been deducted from it are not recognized by the government as part of your real income when calculating your taxable salaries. It’s like the government is refunding you for whatever expenses you incur for the sake of your house, which is only fair and just.

These days your home and family can never be too safe from intruders and from accidents waiting to happen. The surest way to protect yourself and your family is to outfit your home with smoke detection alarms and indoor and outdoor wireless security cameras.

Home Security Shouldn’t Wait

When it comes to home security, homeowners go for bugler alarms, smoke detection devices and indoor and outdoor wireless security cameras. This potent cache of home and family protection gadgets can put to rest your apprehensions over intruders and accidents. With several options available to suit your budget why should you delay securing the safety of your loved ones and your home?

Delaying to secure the safety of your home and family may end in tragedy, and that would be too late. No amount of amount of money can justify the loss. Since you cannot predict what will happen today and tomorrow, it’s better to be ready and have the peace of mind from knowing your home is equipped with indoor and outdoor wireless security cameras, fire alarms, and that all windows and doors have sturdy locks.

What is extreme about indoor and outdoor wireless security cameras? These cameras work non-stop to record detected motion. An intruder can be caught on an outdoor camera while he still lurking out there. Inside the home, your security cameras can catch him rifling through your drawers and while he is at it, you can alert the police or 911. If your spouse and your kids are at home, you can alert them to get out of the house fast.

Why Outdoor Home Security?

Your indoor surveillance is good enough but having outdoor wireless security cameras trebles your sense of security. Why not? It’s simple. These cameras are built to withstand all weather conditions and can capture images even in poor illumination. Before thieves can get in, you are alerted by these cameras! This is a hundred times better than dealing with an intruder indoors, right?

Any would-be intruder has to find a way to get in a house. They’ll case the front yard, check out the obstacles in the backyard and note those low windows where they can easily clamber over to reach the living room. But if you have outdoor wireless security cameras blatantly displayed or hidden, you got an ace up your sleeve.

Another thing; children love to play in the front yard. Checking on them while you are Cooking or doing the dishes will be convenient than rushing outdoors every minute to check on them. These cameras can protect your car from vandals and carnappers and a nosey neighbor won’t dare be caught lurking in the bushes when he thinks you’re not looking.

Don’t Slacken on Home Security

Depending on your security needs, you can opt for pan/tilt camera, infrared cameras, or fixed cameras. Perhaps you want the whole neighborhood to know you have a house guard 24/7 or you want hidden cameras to lure miscreants into complacency and believe you’re a greenhorn when it comes to Home security.

Increasing your home security has no minuses, only pluses. It won’t cost an arm and a leg to secure your home but it will cost you a fortune to replace what you have lost to thieves or fire. Better go the extreme when it comes to home security than be sorry later for lack of outdoor wireless security cameras.
