I’m looking for Furniture makers/brands that make solid wood bedroom furniture without veneers, and preferably ones that use old-Fashioned carpentry techniques like dovetails, mortise and tendon, etc… Also, on another note, is Broyhill a good furniture company? My sister is looking into getting the Fontana collection for her room and I wanted to check that out for her. I’m still trying to see if I can find solid hardwood furniture before I give up and go with something else that uses veneers. Thanks.

I am in the process of setting up a small furniture making Business and I need to know how do you go about sending coffee tables etc that are not flat- packed. I would imagine that you would bubble-wrap the items and then get a freight company like Fedex to pick them up. Is it that easy? Should I consider putting these type of items in crates. The coffee tables I have made would be sent out lndividually to customers. They are not overly expensive and really not that large. But would Fedex etc accept this type of furniture without being crated.

If it is OK to send just by bubble-wrapping, what is the best way to do this to ensure the items does not get damaged?
I would also be sending out the coffee tables etc to international customers.

Me and my wife had some Furniture delivered from the pottery barn a few months ago. We had two nitestands, a big dresser and a head board and they basically put the two nitestands and dresser in big boxes reinforced with plywood strips and lots of stryrofoam, all kinds of it too. And all of our furniture was delivered flawless. not so much as a smuge. I can sort of see why the delivery charge was kind of steep.

Despite the great variety of wood types, northern pine and cedar continue to be the dominant woods used in the construction of Adirondack furniture.  They are readily available, sustainable, economical and make a great product when maintained well.

When choosing between pine and cedar there are a few things to keep in mind.  First, cedar chairs will tend to cost about twice what pine chairs run.  Pine is a more accessible product and therefore the cost of the wood is cheaper than cedar.  If the chairs will be left on a covered porch, indoors, or out of the elements, pine represents the best value.  In these conditions pine will last a long time.  You may well be passing the furniture down to your children.

The extra cost of  cedar can be worth the price, however, when considering the longevity of the product for outdoor use.  If left outdoors pine chairs will last about a decade when properly treated and cared for.  Cedar chairs can last twice as long if not longer.  The natural elements of cedar make it better adapted to withstanding sun, water and insect damage.  

Either style of wood is durable.  Both are soft woods with incredible structural integrity.  The look is quite similar.  In fact, both pine and cedar can look quite alike when initially harvested.  They will both age and patina at a similar pace.  They are both light.  Both accept paint or stain equally well.  

Regardless of which type of wood you select, be sure you are purchasing a US made chair.  If a part breaks, which can occur with any exterior wood product, you want to make sure you can call the company directly and order a replacement.  It can mean the difference between paying $7 for a new arm or $200 for a new chair.  Pine or cedar…you’re sure to enjoy your Adirondack furniture.

Hi,

I am have just formed a new company in my home and want to contribute my old furniture (in addition to money) as a start-up investment. This furniture is about 4 months old and I do not have any receipts for them. I do have CC statements though.
1) Can I contribute this furniture as start-up assets to my business?
2) How do I decide FMV for the furniture if I do not have receipts?

You should start by reading the IRS rules for home office expense, and deciding if the furniture qualifies as being deductible. Personally, I wouldn’t try to take a tax deduction for it unless it was in an area of my Home designated as the office, and 100% used for that purpose. If the furniture is in your living room and used partially for Business use and partially for personal use, the IRS will see a red flag if you get audited.

If you do have a deductible home office, then the furniture in that office can be treated as a capital asset and depreciated over the life of the furniture. You may also be able to deduct the entire amount right away using Section 179 depreciation expense.

It seems the credit card statements could serve as proof of your cost. However, since it has only been four months you might also be able to get your Retailers to provide you with copies of the receipts.

I would take a reasonable percentage of the furniture’s cost to assign market value. If it is only 4 months old, it is probably in near new condition. Nevertheless, it has gone down in value somewhat. I think they say a car goes down in value by as much as 25% when you drive it off the lot. Seems like you could value the furniture at 70-90% of what you paid for it, depending on its condition, since it is so new.

An even better way of valuing the furniture might be to decide what depreciation would be over the life of the furniture, then compute the amount attributable to the 4 months of home use and reduce the cost of the furniture by that amount. I hope this helps.
